The session

What it’s about.

Earth has been the building material of rural South India for centuries: it is cool in summer, warm at night, uses almost no energy to make, and returns to the ground when it's done. This workshop is hands-on from the start — testing soil, mixing it with straw, sand and water, and using traditional techniques to build a small section of wall and finish it with an earthen plaster.

What you’ll do

  1. 1Reading soil: simple jar and ribbon tests to judge clay and sand content
  2. 2Mixing cob by foot and hand — straw, sand, clay and water
  3. 3Building: forming mud blocks and laying a small cob wall section
  4. 4Finishing with an earthen plaster, and a look at lime and natural binders

Usual questions.

Moderately. Mixing cob is done with your feet and it's good exercise, but you can go at your own pace.
