The session

What it’s about.

The Miyawaki method, developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, grows a dense, multi-layered forest on a small plot by planting many native species close together on well-prepared soil. Planted this way, saplings compete for light and grow quickly, and the patch typically needs little care after its first few years. In this workshop you learn the method and then do it — preparing the soil and planting a section of a native mini-forest at Bevu.

What you’ll do

  1. 1Why native species, and how the layers work: shrub, sub-tree, tree and canopy
  2. 2Soil preparation: digging, adding biomass, compost and mulch
  3. 3Planting: three to four saplings per square metre, mixed so no two of the same species sit side by side
  4. 4Mulching and watering, and a plaque with your group's name
