The weekend

Why here.

Bangalore's sky is gone; Bevu's is mostly still there. We're far enough from Hosur that the horizon glow is low, and the lawn has a clear view east and overhead with the boulders blocking the last of the village lights. On a new-moon weekend between October and March the Milky Way is plainly visible. We switch every outdoor light off on request, and the pool deck makes a flat, dry platform for tripods.

What makes it work

  • Lights-out policy on request — the whole property goes dark
  • Flat lawn and pool deck for telescopes and tracking mounts; power points at the veranda
  • Clear east and zenith; the boulders make a dramatic foreground for astrophotography
  • Late breakfast and blackout curtains, because you'll be up till three
  • Red-light torches available; hot chocolate at midnight is a house rule
A sample schedule

Roughly how it goes.

  2. Sat 18:30Early dinner, lights out at 19:30
  3. Sat 20:00Observing and imaging; the house stays dark
  4. Sun 02:00Hot chocolate, last targets, bed
  5. Sun 09:30Late breakfast, pool, leave when you like

FAQ

Usual questions.

Not a desert. There's a faint glow to the north-west from Hosur and Bangalore; overhead and east are good. Bortle 4-ish on a clear new-moon night, by our guests' estimates, not a meter — bring one and tell us.
