The weekend

Why here.

The farm sits in dry deciduous scrub and boulder country — a habitat most Bangalore birders drive past on the way to somewhere else. It rewards slowing down: the early morning is loud with mynas, bee-eaters, bulbuls and the occasional raptor working the outcrops, and the lawn at night belongs to the owls and the stars. Bring binoculars; we keep a pair and a field guide in the living room.

What makes it work

  • Dawn walk along the farm track and tamarind grove — a 40-minute loop we know well
  • Boulder scramble at golden hour for raptors and the view
  • Night walk for owls, nightjars and insects (bring a headtorch)
  • Long table for the day's checklist and a talk if one of you wants to give one
  • Quiet house: no music, no bonfire unless you ask

FAQ

Usual questions.

Honest answer: a typical dry-scrub list — 40–60 species over a weekend for a keen group, with raptors and owls the highlights. It is not a wetland; the tanks nearby add waterbirds if you drive.
